Spencer believes that true healing in mental health and addiction recovery begins in the body. When we experience stress or trauma, our nervous system can get stuck in a state of fight, flight, or freeze. This can lead to anxiety, panic, and a feeling of being constantly on edge, which often makes it difficult to think clearly or feel in control. Because we feel out of control, we may turn to a variety of “acting out” behaviors (substances, sex/porn, gambling, video games, rage, disconnection…etc) in an attempt to regulate our nervous system.
Spencer uses a “bottom-up” approach, which focuses on helping you build a felt sense of safety and calm within your body as the first step of therapeutic treatment. Through gentle, body-centered techniques, he’ll help you work to regulate your nervous system – empowering you to feel safe in your body. From this place of calm, it becomes much easier to shift unhelpful behaviors and thought patterns, make new choices, and build the confidence to handle life’s challenges. The goal is to move from a state of survival to one of thriving, with your body and mind working together in harmony.
Spencer’s approach is centered on connecting with clients, giving them the opportunity to share their story, and ultimately equipping and empowering them to change the narrative of their story in a way that will help them to thrive. Spencer finds it particularly rewarding to create a space where those who feel unheard can truly find their voice.
