5.22.26
Dear Grace Family,
I love the month of May. The school year comes to its end with a flurry of “end of year” activities, exams, and field days. Graduates walk and receive degrees after years of hard work, with many who are simply grateful to be at the finish line. The weather warms and cools with fits and starts, but the trees have their leaves and the flowers have largely bloomed. Summer is right around the corner.
And in the middle of all of this transition, change, excitement, anticipation, or in the grief of launching a child, the historical church calendar gives us the day of Pentecost. Now 50 days after Easter, we remember the gift of the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus to his followers and still given to us for life and holiness and power.
On Sunday we’ll open the Scriptures together and remember what happened on that day in that upper room so many years ago and why it still matters. We’ll consider how the Spirit distributes gifts for the Church and why living with expectation that God’s not done with us yet is so essential to living a fruitful life on mission.
I want to encourage you to take a moment this week, in the middle of the business of May, to stop with God and pray this simple prayer, “Come, Holy Spirit.” We invite Him to fill us like Paul instructed and we ask Him to take us beyond our current experience with God. I’ll remind you of this on Sunday, but I loved how Pastor Brian Henderson taught us last week that God is a God to be experienced personally, and also, that we have our guidelines and direction in His word so we should never veer from it.
I’m coming to our services with expectation that God will meet us, gently or loudly, but with this reality… that the same God who parted the red sea can meet us in all of our circumstances with encouragement and resourcing to walk with Him and live life to the full.
Praying with you!
Pastor Tim
