Dear Grace Family,

What a wild week of weather we’ve experienced! I hope you’ve all stayed safe and as warm as possible. Thanks SO MUCH to the team who made last Sunday’s livestream service possible. From worship team members to those on cameras to Pastor Scott who preached and everyone in between, you made it possible to worship together in our homes. So grateful. If you missed last Sunday’s service, watch here.

The weather hasn’t been the only thing of note in our news cycle. I don’t always speak about the news because there is a crisis every day and we could spend all of our time focused on crises in our country and around the world. But, there are times when our collective anxiety and concern rises to the level of a conversation as a church. Another disclaimer: I love the variety of perspectives and backgrounds represented at Grace Church. We do not all agree politically or on different issues of preference but we find ways to unite around the shared worship and mission of Jesus. This is the way of the Kingdom and it is so counter-cultural that many may wonder: is it possible? It is.

As we have watched what has unfolded in the Twin Cities, our hearts are heavy for people, for our country, and for many who wake up uncertain about their future. I have friends who pastor in these neighborhoods and it has been extremely challenging.  As we think about these things and engage with them, I want to give you some pastoral encouragement and then share a recent video by the “old pastor” (ahem, former pastor) Jonathan about this. My encouragement: may we be formed first in our worship of Jesus, our studying of Scripture, our submission to His plan, and our love people rather than in the social media or the news.

Those things aren’t necessarily bad, but they shouldn’t be our first place of identity or emotional strength. I’m so grateful that Jesus is on the throne and He will continue to accomplish His plans in the world and he invites us into it. Let us be a people who are quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. (James 1:19) And, let’s always remember that as we debate issues, there are real people in the middle of these conversations. Check out this encouraging (and challenging) video from our former Pastor, Jonathan.

I am eager to be back with you on Sunday as we continue our series, PR4Y. We’ll look at the invitation of Jesus to have our lives and purposes redefined by his call to us as his disciples. Can’t wait to be back worshipping together in person.

Finally, Grace Church is led by a team of Elders—who serve 3-year terms to give oversight to the spiritual guidance of Grace Church (see 1 Timothy 3:1-7; 1 Peter 5:1-4). If you would like to nominate a person for this role, the Nominating Committee will be prayerfully discerning candidates in the coming weeks. See the nomination form here.

With you,

Pastor Tim
