The Life of Peter Lee Arnold

Peter was a fisherman, a disciple, an apostle, a prisoner, a leader of the early church, a missionary to unbelieving gentiles, and he sometimes referred to himself as “a bond-servant of Jesus Christ”. How did Peter go from being a fisherman to becoming a fisher of men, and more importantly, how can his example help us to live life with that same passion and purpose? This class will review the life of Peter in chronological order, from his earliest encounter with Jesus at the Jordan River, through his becoming a disciple and apostle, his travels and training with Jesus, his denial and then bold proclamations of Christ, to his final letters. Since hardly a chapter goes by in the Gospels and the first half of Acts where Peter is not in the narrative, it’s a great opportunity to get an overview of the first part of the New Testament. Each week as we look at another segment of Peter’s life, we will see how his life was changed through his encounters with Jesus, and how we can be changed as well.

The truth is, many people who deeply love God and desire to live for him struggle with addictions and compulsive behaviors. Whoever you are, wherever you have been, you are a person of infinite worth because God created you and because He loves you. Through recovery, you can become the unique human being that God designed you to be and live a Christ-honoring lifestyle that you tried to satisfy with your addictions and compulsions. This meeting begins with everyone together in a large group for prayer, readings, worship, devotion and a lesson, testimony or topic discussion. This study of one of the Apostle Paul’s letters focuses on the basic, yet crucial question of how a person is saved.  Using a study guide authored by theologian John Stott, this class will be highly interactive and explore in detail the many components of the “faith vs. works” issue.  In Stott’s own words, “The false teaching in Galatia centered on faith versus law.  What is required of us to be Christians?  Some were saying we must follow Old Testament law.  Again and again Paul directs them back to Jesus Christ as the one who saves.  While the kinds of laws Christians today attempt to follow may differ, this is nonetheless an issue for us.”  Yes, this question of faith versus works is still a very relevant question for the church!  Come and explore this core issue with us, as well as other closely connected questions related to the Holy Spirit, loving one another, and sowing and reaping.
