Planning to Help

Some of you have seen the just-released movie, Unplanned. It’s the compelling, and true story of Abby Johnson, an award-winning Planned Parenthood Director who has a dramatic turn in life after witnessing an abortion for herself.

Like many others who have seen (or read) Abby's story, I found the film profoundly moving. A few people have asked me, “What can Christians do to demonstrate love and compassion for women who face a crisis pregnancy?"  Many of these women feel trapped by their circumstances, not wanting an abortion, but unsure what other choice they have. These young women feel fear, anger, and guilt for their next decisions, and many times abortion is their last resort.

What would Jesus have us do?
The gospels make it clear that Jesus loves children. Jesus also loves parents. What are some ways we can give ongoing support in a way that could help reduce the level of crisis a woman faces with an unexpected pregnancy? We always want to do more, but here are some starting points. The follow are ongoing ministries within our Grace family, and in our local mission partnerships.

Meet Practical Needs
The Cleveland Pregnancy Center meets practical needs, like clothing, appliances, and education for parents of a crisis pregnancy.

Adopt Children and Support Adoptive Families
Hundreds of children have been loved by Grace families through foster care and adoption. See if you can help support one of these families in small and meaningful ways: offer to be a prayer partner for a couple who are facing a long wait in their adoption process. Offer to babysit and provide a night off for parents, bring a meal, or run an errand for them during a busy week.

Support Vocational Training
Many at Grace volunteer at Laura's Home to care and train women who have gotten out of abusive situations or going through crisis.

Serve Single Parents
A significant amount of our Emergency Relief Fund at Grace goes to single parents. We also give special consideration for single parents who are seeking scholarships for counseling and Making Peace weekend retreats. A team of individuals at Grace who specialise in basic home repairs and improvements do priority projects, donating their time to help single moms and widows. In addition to support groups for single moms to share and encourage one another, mentoring and emergency housing have also been provided by various families at Grace.

Can you think of other ways we can show Jesus' compassion as a family? Our heart is to honor him more as we show love to those who matter so deeply to him, from the start of life to the end. Message us on Facebook if you have questions or ideas!
